The casings on a Bungalow Heaven double-hung are original, often quarter-sawn oak or old-growth fir, and nobody who bought the house wants them hidden or drilled through. So we mount inside the casing where the depth allows (relaxed romans and light-filtering rollers sit beautifully inside a four-inch Craftsman frame) and, where the room wants drapery, we hang it from the head casing or the wall above it so the trim stays fully on show, with returns sized so the panels stack clear of the woodwork when open. Every screw goes into the wall or the top of the head casing, never the face of the trim, and we've patched enough decades-old bracket scars in other people's houses to understand why owners ask twice.
The Spanish Colonial Revival and Tudor houses of Madison Heights, Oak Knoll, and the San Rafael hills bring arches, leaded glass, and deep-set casements that swing in. Arched tops get a fixed sheer or a shaped shade with an operable treatment below; leaded windows get left alone by day and covered at night with drapery on a track, so the glass stays the room's feature and the bedroom still goes dark. Hastings Ranch is the opposite brief: 1950s picture windows and sliders where recessed rollers, zebras, and clean grommet or ripple fold drapery do the work and nothing competes with the view of the mountains. And the Old Pasadena and Playhouse District lofts want tall, simple answers, usually motorized rollers on glass no ladder should have to reach.
A recent one: a 1912 bungalow off Washington Boulevard in Bungalow Heaven with eleven original double-hungs, a west-facing sleeping porch converted to a bedroom, and an owner who'd lived with bare glass for six years rather than risk the trim. We fitted relaxed romans in a washed oatmeal linen inside every casing, blackout-lined in the bedroom, plus a pair of floor-length pinch pleat panels on the living room's triple window, mounted to the wall above the head casing so the oak is untouched and fully visible when the drapes stack. Eleven windows, no holes in the trim, and a bedroom that finally stays dark past six. That last part matters more here than most places: morning sun clears the San Gabriels early and lands on east glass at full strength, so east-facing bedrooms in Pasadena get blackout as a matter of course.

Can you install window treatments without damaging original Craftsman trim?
Yes, and it's most of our Pasadena work. Shades mount inside the casing on the top jamb, where a couple of small screws sit out of sight; drapery hardware mounts to the wall above the head casing or to the top edge of the casing itself, never through the face of the trim. When the drapes are open they stack beside the window and the woodwork reads exactly as it did. If a window's casing is too shallow for an inside mount, we'll say so at the measurement and show you the outside-mount version that still keeps the trim on show.
What works on arched or leaded-glass windows?
For arches, a fixed sheer or a shaped shade in the curve with an operable roman or roller below, or drapery hung high enough that the arch stays visible above the rod. Leaded glass is usually worth leaving bare by day and covering by night with drapery on a track, so the glass stays the room's feature and the bedroom still gets dark. We template arches in person rather than from plans, because hundred-year-old curves are rarely true, and a shade cut to the drawing instead of the window shows a sliver of daylight along one side forever.
Do you do blackout for east-facing Pasadena bedrooms?
Every week; the sun clears the San Gabriels early and lands on east glass at full strength. Inside a Craftsman casing we use blackout-lined romans or opaque rollers sized to the opening, and where the casing is too shallow we mount an opaque roller to overlap the frame instead. Bedrooms that want softness and darkness get both: a lined roman for the daytime look and blackout drapery over it for the night. Say how dark you need it and we'll spec the lining and overlaps to match.
How long does a Pasadena project take?
Four to six weeks door to door on average: the free measurement, about a week for swatches and the quote, three to four weeks of sewing in our LA workroom, then a scheduled installation. Older houses add a little time at the measurement, not at the sewing, because we check every opening for square. If a move-in date is driving the timeline, say so early and we'll be straight about what's achievable.
